Biography
Oscar Micheaux (1884–1951) was the most prolific Black American filmmaker of the silent era and one of the first independent producer-directors in the United States. He wrote, financed, directed and distributed his own features, selling shares in his productions directly to investors and booking the finished films himself.
His films were made outside the studio system for audiences the studios ignored, and they engaged directly with subjects Hollywood avoided. Within Our Gates (1920), his earliest surviving feature, is now held as a landmark of American independent cinema.
